Top 5 reason to cut out artificial sweeteners
Humans are one of the very few beings on earth that alters its food for taste. Most other animals have to compete so much for food that they eat their food immediately and with no customization. Humans, however, spend an inordinate time cooking, baking, seasoning, and preparing our food. One of the most popular alterations to our food is sweetening. We add sugar and other sweeteners such as honey to drinks, desserts, and even savory foods to create contrast.
As we learned that sugar can cause diabetes and other health concerns, we started using artificial sweeteners which boasted fewer calories and less harm to our bodies. However, studies have shown that artificial sweeteners may impede pregnancy and fertility rates, increase chances of obesity, and more. Here are 5 solid reasons to avoid artificial sweeteners altogether.
Women who drink diet soda on a regular basis are more likely to have difficulty getting pregnant. Studies show that women who undergo in vitro fertilization drink more diet soda which contains artificial sweeteners and add more artificial sweetener to their coffee.
According to professor Adam Balen, chairman of the British Fertility Society, the study “suggests the false promise of artificial sweeteners that are found in soft drinks and added to drinks, such as coffee, may have a significant effect on the quality and fertility of women’s eggs and this may further impact on the chances of conception,” he says. “There should be more scrutiny of food additives and better information available to the public and, in particular, those wishing to conceive.”
Aspartame and other fake sweeteners trick your taste buds into thinking you’re eating real sugar, which is why we can use them as a substitute for the real thing and not really miss real sugar. However, these sweeteners can be up to 1,000 times sweeter than the real thing. As a result, your body increases the amount of insulin it produces and slows down your metabolism. This increases hunger and makes you want to eat more than you actually need.
Fake sugar can actually increase the weight you gain and the chances you have to get metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Because your body is being tricked into producing more insulin and you may want to eat more and more starchy and unhealthy food, you are put at risk for more serious health concerns over time.
Artificial sweeteners can become more addicting than real sugar. The body grows to prefer the taste. And because they are sweeter than regular sugar, you tend to crave the taste even more. Rats who have been introduced cocaine will actually choose artificial sweetener over cocaine if given the choice.
In studies, there has been shown to be an increase in the risk of cancer when introduced to artificial sweeteners like sucralose, saccharin, and aspartame. This has been proven in animals and so far not proven with humans.
Overall, it’s best to avoid these sweeteners. They have been proven over and over to increase the possibility of the conditions and diseases that they claim to cure. Instead of diet soda or “lite” drinks that contain fake sugar, try sparkling water with some fruit juice. If you want to avoid sugar but keep sweetness, try adding fruit or honey to your desserts instead.
